The Upcoming War in Iran Part II

It appears that we are headed for war once again. In fact, the U.S. may already be in the midst of an ongoing armed conflict with Iran. I wrote about the ramp up toward a war with Iran here a few weeks ago. Since then, the signs have only gotten worse.

To begin with, the U.S. might already be using force against Iran in violation of Article 2(7) of the U.N Charter. Observers have warned about covert actions in Iran for years, but this week the Guardian reported that this covert war is heating up. This comes just after Iran recovered a U.S. spy drone in its territory and rebuffed a flimsy attempt from the U.S. at cyber-diplomacy.

To add fuel to the fire, leading Republicans like Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are openly calling for non-defensive use of force against Iran. (And by non-defensive, I mean illegal.)

The impending war in Iran, however, has strong bipartisan support. Former Democratic presidential candidate Evan Bayh is outspoken in his push for the war. In 2008, he dropped this little gem:

“You just hope that we haven’t soured an entire generation on the necessity, from time to time, of using force because Iraq has been such a debacle. That would be tragic, because Iran is a grave threat. They’re everything we thought Iraq was but wasn’t. They are seeking nuclear weapons, they do support terrorists, they have threatened to destroy Israel, and they’ve threatened us, too.”

I’ve become convinced that this nation will inevitably go to war with Iran unless there is an overwhelming proactive effort to stop it. As a young Army veteran recently returned from Kosovo, I remember speaking at a protest against the impending War in Iraq in early March of 2003. By then, of course, it was far too late to change the course of events. It’s not too late this time. The time to end the war in Iran is now.
